Alhamdulillah my english 4 final project has done, and I already gave it to my lecture and approved. Thank you. The Human Rights Violation Case of The Tragedy of Trisakti 1998 is Unresolved

The Human rights violation case of the tragedy of Trisakti has not been solved yet, it occurred because of the people who considered as the power behind this case has not been arrested. The government was less responsible to reopen the investigation about this case. The Human Rights court in Indonesia did not do the role as well as desired.

Every year, on May 12th, every person in Indonesia especially the college students celebrate that day as the heroes day, commemorate to the fallen heroes who died in the tragedy of humanity. They were students of Trisakti University: Elang Mulia Lesmana, Hafidin Royan, Heri Hartanto and Hendriawan Sie. 

On Tuesday, May 12th 1998, thousands of students gathered for a peaceful demonstration on the campus of Trisakti University, located between the airport and downtown Jakarta. In the afternoon, they left the campus and went to the parliament. They urged the Indonesian President at that time, President Suharto, to resign as soon as possible. 

The students had just orations and pamphlets as their “weapon” facing the police using bullets. Four students confirmed dead in that riot. Then, the tragedy was known as Tragedy of Trisakti. After that, several riots followed that tragedy, such as Tragedy of Semanggi 1 and 2. On May 21st, finally President Suharto resigned as the President of Indonesia. The tragedy has been passing for 12 years, but the Indonesian people are always faced with big questions which are not answered yet.

The human rights violation case of the tragedy of Trisakti 1998 is unresolved, it occurred because of the people who considered as the power behind this case has not been arrested yet. It has been 12 years since the tragedy of Trisakti occurred, it is not yet solved. The government did not arrest the suspect who might involve in that tragedy. There are many issues and accusations to some justice officials involved in that tragedy as the suspect who took responsible of the tragedy. Four students died by their men’s guns. The victim’s family always demanded that the suspect who responsible for this tragedy occurred must be arrested as soon as possible.

The government is less responsible to reopen the investigation about this case. It was also the one of the main reasons why the human rights violation case has not been unresolved. The victim’s family has not gets the justice yet. Nevertheless the government impressed did not want to arrest and reveal the suspect behind this case. It makes the Indonesian people especially the victim’s family was not satisfied. Until now, they always demand that the suspect and the people who involved in this case must be arrested and this case can be solved as soon as possible. They are impressed that they did not have desire to reveal or arrest the suspect but they protect the suspect and give the impunity.

All the reasons why the human rights violation case in tragedy of Trisakti occurred lead to the role of the Human Rights court in Indonesia does not run as well as desired. After the tragedy and the resignation of Suharto as the President of Indonesia, Indonesia left the era of Suharto and entered the era of democracy that indicated by the acknowledgement and respect for the human rights. Even, the avowal of the human rights of Indonesian people has guaranteed in UUD 1945 (1945 Constitution) as the highest law in Indonesia. In Indonesia, the human rights violation case will be solved in the Human Rights court. However, there were many cases that similar with the tragedy of Trisakti were unresolved yet by the Human Rights court. For example, one of the human rights violations in Indonesia, the case of Munir’s murder was also unresolved till now. It shows that the government takes full control of the system in Human Rights court. The court itself does not stand independently. It properly stands independently as the one law institution which is have a responsibility of completion every human rights violation cases and cannot be influenced or controlled by the outside of environmental justice.

There are many explicit desires of some people and of course there are many parties who want the human rights violation case to be forgotten. However, the human struggle against the power is same as the struggle of memory against the forgetfulness. They died, they gave everything they have including their lives to fight to uphold the truth, justice and democracy. The Human rights violation case of the tragedy of Trisakti will be solved, if the people who considered as the power behind this case or named as the suspect confess their sins and arrested. Also, the Human Rights court in Indonesia must stand independently and run the role as well as desired. The government must be responsible to solve the human right violation case as well as the Indonesian people desire. It explicitly gives a message to the government of Indonesia, “Do not be mess with the responsibility”.
